Right now lm sat on a mini bus traveling from Whistler to Wells Gray PP with 10 people l met only 48 hours ago, and listening to Ben Howard’s Every Kingdom album as standard. ( And yes l get travel sick writing so enjoy this post 😉 I will be completely honest, only 5 years ago meeting new people was actually my worst nightmare, ‘what if they don’t like me’ ‘what if it’s awkward’ i’d much prefer to keep myself to myself i.e stay within my comfort zone and just label everyone as worthless to me and avoid conversation. Sounds horrible l know but this was how my head used to work, i’d grown up around very introvert, negative people so l knew no other way. I will tell you what, l still get that little ‘uhhee’ feeling every time l’m in the same situation, it’s a constant learning process, l look at it as a skill you must keep practising to master.

So what was the first thing l proceeded to do? l went and introduced myself and shook hands with every single person, break down the barriers before they even start to form. A good first impression goes a very long way and i’ll tell you what you will feel pretty proud of yourself for getting involved.

First impressions out the way and what does my head go straight to next? Training!?! Does anyone train? are they going to want to? will there be gyms? That’s just my natural instinctive want/need to train setting in. I literally spent about 3 hours worrying about the gym before suddenly stopping myself with the words ‘You’re in fucking Canada, you can train everyday at home, man up!!’ We all have our own ways but it brought me straight back to the reason l was here, to travel, experience and find happiness in the simple things, spontaneous moments and building new memories.

This photo was taken on a walk myself and Carly just decided to take instead of sitting in camp, we got out and explored and man did we laugh, because we trained? Hell no, because we were getting a tan? Nope! Because we were just in that moment.

Look team l know it’s very easy to talk and preach about happiness and being in the moment when l’m sat here travelling around a beautiful country. But most people use the excuse ‘well it was because l was on holiday’ as to why they were happy, yes a little sun, sea and sangria helps but the most fundamental reason we feel better on holiday is because we’re present, just taking in every last moment like it were our last day on earth, all because we know we need to go back to reality in a week, or two if we’re lucky! Why stop there? Reality doesn’t suck, it’s no better or worse it’s just our perception.

The point is, when you strip it all back, no matter where you are you always have the ability to be happy, sometimes you have to just throw yourself in to the unknown to get that high thrill of awesomeness afterwards or for others maybe you just need to have a sharp word with yourself every now and then. But remember it’s a continuous process, you will have up’s and downs along the way but happiness is found in enjoying and learning from every single moment that happens along the way.

☺ You’ve totally touched on the heart of the matter; Being Present. It took me years to learn how; hard lessons and soft lessons pointing the way. The hard lessons came from my parents’ passing, and then years later my husband also. I now understand how precious life is, about how I can’t control the timing of life events, but I can control my attitude. The soft lessons about being in the moment have been in learning the ever-deepening benefits of meditation, in enjoying long walks and bike rides, being in Nature, feeling the flow when I play music. And practising Gratitude puts me in the right mood pretty quickly. So powerful

Years ago I read a book called Happiness is a Choice, written by a couple whose young son died of a terminal disease. Rather than dwelling on the loss of him, they focused on cherishing their memories of him, of feeling Grateful for the time they had had with him. By the end of the book, I understood the point they were making; Happiness is not something that appears once you get that car, live in a big house, finally get your parents’ approval. It is a choice that we make over and over and over, in each moment. Happiness is an attitude, an orientation. It is about dropping our need to feel in control, and allowing ourselves to be touched by the beauties and blessings that ever surround us.

Thanks for pointing us in the right direction ❤

WOW, couldn’t agree more. So many of us spend are lives searching for happiness but it’s not a destination it’s a way of living.
